Pravana Perfection - A Gentle & Safe Smooth Out for Your Hair!
Do it yourself or go to a salon? When I want to change my hair this question always crosses my mind. Not that I would ever attempt to cut it on my own, but for other treatments, I always consider the more affordable at-home option. However, there are many benefits offered at a salon that you just can't replicate at home. So when you do choose to go to a salon, you want to make sure you enjoy your experience, because it really is that, an experience, not just a service. When I go to a salon, I want to walk out of there feeling like a million bucks! I want a significant change done with my hair and I want to feel good about it! Certified Fabulous recently took a trip to New York, and we had the opportunity to stop by De Berardinis Salon on W 21st Street. The whole million bucks experience I'm talking about? Definitely got it here!
Before our New York trip, I was looking into the different types of smoothing treatments to help the frizziness/coarseness of my hair that bothers me so much. But it's hard to know which treatment is right for my hair type, and I don't want to damage it (it's already colored multiple times). So when I heard De Berardinis offered a smooth out that's gentle and safe for your hair, I was all for it! The treatment is called Pravana's Perfection Smooth Out. It contains no formaldehyde, and is shea butter & amino acid based, making it gentle and safe for your hair. The whole process takes about 3 hours, as there are many steps. Here's a breakdown of the treatment process:
- Hair is washed with a clarifying shampoo
- Hair is dried until about 80% of moisture is out of the hair
- Smoothing solution is applied to small sections of the hair
(applied with a brush as if you were getting your hair colored)
- Solution sits/processes for 15 minutes
- Hair is blown out with the treatment still in
- Hair is flat ironed in small sections
(took about 5-6 passes with the flat iron over each section of hair for it to be smooth and shiny)
Once your hair is flat ironed, you are all set to leave the salon with the solution still in your hair. However, you do not need to wait any amount of time before you can wash your hair, so I chose to get my hair rinsed and received the blow out to complete the style!
This treatment will last for up to 3 months. For longer lasting results, use sulfate free shampoo & conditioner. It was also recommended that this treatment be done 4 times a year, every season, to maintain the smooth hair. The second treatment will last longer and even more so as you continue the treatment. I also learned that it is not bad for your hair to repeat the process, something that surprised me.
Each step of the process is done with great care, and precision at De Berardinis. The color specialist, Hayden K, was great in explaining each step, the benefits, how it works, and the care that is needed for the treatment to last.
Here are some before and after photos:
The before photo was just after the rough dry. This is the normal texture of my hair when I blow dry it; rough, coarse, frizzy, especially the under/ back pieces of my hair. I typically need to straighten or curl my hair to flatten and smooth the coarse texture. After the Pravana Smooth Out, my hair was silky smooth, even more so for the natural (non-colored sections of my hair). It has been about a month since the Pravana Smooth Out and my hair is still very shiny and smooth. I do feel like the treatment will last longer on my non-colored sections of my hair, as the more processed ends are beginning to return to their previous state. With that said, if your hair has been processed lately, I would recommend giving it some time before doing a treatment like this. If you have maintained your color and haven't processed your hair drastically lately, I would highly recommend this treatment! My hair was far more manageable after this treatment and drying time was cut down tremendously. For once, I could let it dry on it's own without any frizz or coarseness! The amount of shine that it gained from the smooth out was also very surprising and appreciated. Just a side note, since it smoothed out the frizz and coarse texture of my hair, my hair was mostly straight after the treatment. Going from coarse curly/wavy hair to smooth straight hair was quite a change for me, but it was great to be able to style the different texture and the ease that came with it. After a month, my hair is starting to turn wavy on it's own again, although it is not fully back to it's original state.
I also want to mention a little more about the salon since I had such a lovely experience. The whole staff at De Berardinis is very attentive and welcoming! They always check in to see how you are doing, and even offer cappuccino and wine for a luxurious and relaxing salon experience! I was able to order lunch during my treatment, and when my food came, the staff brought it to me on a silver platter! It was very relaxing, and I also loved the decor of the salon; brightly chic, it was a great atmosphere to spend my 3 hours during the treatment. The staff really makes sure you enjoy your experience, and this combined with the expertise options offered at the salon, De Berardinis is one you'll want to check out the next time you're in New York!
